Dr. Yekeia Askins-Trent

Welcome to Johnakin Middle School! I’m Dr. Yekeia Askins-Trent, and I’m honored to begin my second year as Assistant Principal here at JMS—a place that holds a special spot in my heart, as it’s where I once taught 6th grade English Language Arts.

With over 25 years of experience in education, my journey has taken me through numerous enriching roles, from classroom teacher to district-level instructional coach. I’ve had the privilege of serving as an English Language Arts teacher, TAP Master Teacher, Read to Succeed Literacy Coach, Reading Specialist, and Subject-Matter Expert for the SC Department of Education. Each experience has helped shape the educator and leader I am today.

Academically, I began with a Bachelor of Arts in Professional English from South Carolina State University. I went on to earn a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley University, a Master of Science in Administration and Supervision from Arkansas State University, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Argosy University. I’m currently pursuing my Juris Doctorate in Education Law at North Carolina Central University, as I believe in being a lifelong learner and advocate for equity in education.

At Johnakin, I am committed to creating a positive and collaborative school environment where students thrive, teachers feel supported, and families are engaged. One of my favorite quotes sums up my educational philosophy: “The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue to grow as we continue to live.”

I look forward to another incredible year of growth and learning together!
